PINE CITY, MN – The dry weather that has plagued most of the country this year shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. The latest drought condition report released by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) states that 96% of Minnesota is facing moderate or worse drought conditions. The Department of Agriculture in North Dakota reports similar statistics for that state, with drought conditions ranging from moderate to severe across the entire state. While brown, dry lawns and withering crops are the first noticeable signs of drought, there is much more going on beneath the earth’s surface.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, spring rains saved many of the region’s crops, but residents are not free from all adverse effects of the drought. Homeowners across Minnesota and North Dakota now face an onslaught of problems with their homes’ foundations. The National Public Radio (NPR) recently featured a story on the ongoing drought problem in the Midwest, noting that cracking house foundations are a serious underlying danger caused by the drought. Because of dry soil shrinking away from foundations, many homeowners are left with cracks in their drywall and foundation, uneven floors, and windows and doors that are hard to open. Not only are these problems unsightly, but they can also lead to serious problems that can adversely affect a home’s safety, structural integrity, and property value.
Innovative Basement Authority continues to receive a large number of calls from homeowners who are experiencing foundation settlement due to drought. Despite the high number of area homeowners with drought-induced foundation problems, Innovative has been able to respond quickly to ensure minimal disruption to the homeowners’ lives. We use a system that employs piers driven into bedrock or load-bearing strata, resulting in the home being supported by the piers instead of the problem soil. Because of our effective system and efficiency in getting the job done, Innovative Basement Authority is able to keep up with the drought and help homeowners with problematic foundations in the face of a drought that shows no sign of slowing down.
