Waterproof Your Way to a New Year’s Resolution Come True

Friday, January 3rd, 2014 by Betsy Rathburn

Every year, one of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make is to spend more time with their family. And after a festive, family-filled holiday season, it’s easy to believe you can spend more of the next year doing the same. Unfortunately, New Year’s resolutions are notorious for being abandoned. Something always seems to get in the way: a busy week at work causes you to postpone that weekend at the cabin, fixing a leaky faucet mean missing an afternoon out back with the kids.

At Innovative Basement Authority, we can’t help you get out of work early, but we can help you make sure a home repair doesn’t get in the way of your family time. Our New Year’s resolution is to continue doing our part in helping homeowners across Minnesota and North Dakota enjoy their homes so they can enjoy time with their loved ones. So what’s the one home problem that causes the most lost time every year?

Flooded basements are all too common around here, causing homeowners to lose both time and money dealing with the aftermath. Here are the things that will take up the most of your valuable time during a basement flood:

1. Salvaging Your Possessions

If you’re like most people, you probably use your basement for storage. You know that even if you’re not using something right now, you could still want or need it in the future. All of those hand-me-down clothes just waiting to be grown into, pieces of furniture you haven’t yet found a place for – not to mention family photos and mementos – are probably worth much more to you than their actual cash value.

But when your basement floods, you may have to say goodbye to all or part of your collection. You’ll have to spend a lot of time checking things over to make sure mold and mildew don’t spread across the basement – time that could be spent having fun with your family.

2. Drying Out Your Basement

Along with salvaging your possessions, drying out your basement is an important part of dealing with a basement flood. Unfortunately, it can be a long process. You’ll have to find a way to pump out the water which, if it’s particularly high, could take hours. After that, you’ll probably still have some shallow puddles to either manually suck up with a wet/dry vacuum or push toward the pump or drain. This process can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, and even after you’re done you’ll have to closely monitor your basement for mold.

3. Preventing Future Floods

With more than 10 years in the business, we’ve seen some interesting homemade solutions for basement flooding. The thing is, no matter how many buckets you put out to catch the drips, no matter how many systems you rig up to pump out water, you’re just temporarily preventing the inevitable. Until you commit to a real solution, you’re always going to be on your toes, trying to stay one step ahead of the flood. Imagine having the responsibility of prevention taken off your shoulders. You’ll have better peace of mind, more time to do things you actually want to do, and a home less vulnerable to water.

When you work with an experienced waterproofer, one with up-to-date training and the best waterproofing products at its disposal – one like Innovative Basement Authority – waterproofing is easy. So are you ready to devote less time to salvaging your stuff, drying out your basement, and installing ineffective prevention methods? Call us now to get started.
