Deciding to build or renovate a home is a big deal. When making such an important decision, it’s crucial you know how to build smart for the future. By adding a few minor adjustments in your plans, you can be saving mega bucks in the future! How, you might ask? Innovative Basement Authority specializes in providing the most energy efficient homes with their expertise. Let’s start from the ground and work our way up.
Start Here: The crawlspace
WARNING: Don’t build for a dirt crawlspace! This will cause high heating and cooling bills in the future due to the exposed earth. Instead, take advantage of our CrawlSeal®. This mold resistant liner can be placed in the crawlspace to assure your home and the air in your home stays healthy!
Moving On: The living area
These areas are extremely important! We’re all about saving energy and money, so this takes us to the type of insulation you should be choosing. Not all insulation works the same. For example, your typical fiberglass insulation will keep you warm and cool when needed, however, it allows the air you “pay” (paid to cool, heat or dehumidify) for to leak out of your home. When air leaks out and into your home, it causes higher energy bills to keep your home comfortable.
Instead, you should choose spray foam insulation! This type of insulation is sprayed onto the walls. The reason it’s so great is because it doesn’t allow air to leak in or out of your home. Its air sealed which essentially means you’re not losing your paid air and you’re saving money!
We’ve Reached the Top: The attic
There are numerous things you can do to your attic to save energy and money! First you should understand the “stack effect” and how it affects your home. Basically, outside air gets sucked in by the crawlspace and that air pushes out paid air through the upper levels of the home. Here’s what to do:
• Insulation is key! Blown-in insulation is a great choice! This type of insulation is physically blown into the attic through a special machine that shreds the insulation to properly insulate the area.
• Going above and beyond, you can add radiant barriers. These reflective panels are installed in the attic and they can reflect up to 97% of the sun’s heat away from your home!
• Blown-in insulation is great and so are radiant barriers but our system is even better! These foam insulation panels are air sealed, work as radiant barriers, and you can use your entire attic for storage without worrying about insulation everywhere.
Building or renovating a home is an exciting process, so build to save money! Your future self will be happy you did! After all, we do live in an area with some crazy weather – save money on heating and cooling!
