Most homeowners simply don’t know enough about the signs and dangers that high humidity and what that means for their home. In most cases you tell that a home suffers from high humidity assoon as you walk in the door. Here are just a couple things that we notice in some of the thousands of homes that we visit every year.
1. Odors & musty smells
Most homes either have a basement or a crawl space and is usually the source of noticeable odor in your house. The reason is that over 50% of the air you breathe in your home comes from the lowest level. When air escapes a home it draws in more air like a vacuum from the lowest level. If you have a damp or dirty basement that air will be sucked throughout making your whole home smell.
2. Sweaty pipes, ductwork & joists
One of the easiest to detect is condensation coming from your pipes and ductwork. In some cases condensation will form on wood beams and joist. This will allow mold to grow and eventually lead to wood rot and create structural damage to the whole home.
3. Mold spots on wood trim
Mold needs two things in order to grow and become dangerous to your home…high humidity & organic materials like paper and wood. Mold loves paper, cardboard, wood studs and drywall. Mold is well known for being dangerous to your health and should be addressed properly once discovered.
